Art Every Day Month Check In: Nov. 30th

It’s Art Every Day Month around here!

Didn’t get much creating done around the holidays, aside from photos for my Week of Life set. My sister brought home some craft-y supplies and we planned to play, but I was low energy and just didn’t feel like it. Wouldn’t you know I had a surge of creativity as I went to bed last night? I had to write my ideas down to implement later today.. ideas for a Pay It Forward Etsy card swap I’m involved in.. and yesterday I *did* decide to make my own 3-ring binder for my Style School inspiration binder.. Style doesn’t just refer to clothing, it refers to artistic style, home decor style, LIFE style! You can see my binder in the photo above, next to a nifty lamp I thrifted this weekend. I made the binder from 1″ loose binder rings, a hole punch, and an old thrifted vinyl record. The record was songs from Waikiki — Tiny Bubbles and the like. I painted the front gold and made a collage from a photo from Darren Aronofsky’s The Fountain.. it still needs something but I’m not sure what. Better photos when I have proper light, which I didn’t here.

Anyway, Happy Art Every Day Month everyone! I will continue creating, and I hope you will, too!

Art Every Day Month: November 23rd-24th

Since I’m doing the Week of Life project, I’ve been noticing more and more things around me to photograph. One thing I’ve noticed is how much life there still is outside even though it is late November. I never before noticed the grain-like weeds, and the vines and berries of fall! I’ve taken a bunch of photos in the last few days and have been tinkering with them using the techniques I’ve learned in Visual Poetry. I’m finally getting that dreamy, muted, vintage-y effect I love so much. Here’s the best ones from the last few days. Enjoy!

Art Every Day Month: November 19-22

As you may have noticed, Music Medicine Saturdays are on a wee hiatus, since I’m focusing more on Visual Poetry and Art Every Day Month, both of which have been keeping me busy! As if that weren’t enough, yesterday I began Week of Life, a week-long photo challenge where you express your day in 9 photos, for a total of 63 at the end of the week. I’ll be sure to post here when my week is over!

The good thing about Week of Life is that it has me thinking about how everything looks through a camera lens again, which is making me take lots of pictures. So much so that I have to charge my camera battery halfway through the day. ;)

On Thursday I started painting over that blue canvas I showed you. As soon as I had the phoenix painted, I hated it. Hated it, hated it, hated it. Was very bummed since it was meant to be my healing artwork for Goddess School. I have since started over with it — back to the blue as much as I can. I’ll post updates as it goes along, it’s basically just salvaged now and not gone much further.

This weekend has been mostly about photography — as always you can see my digital photo manipulations in my Visual Poetry folder on flickr. Today while out driving I kept seeing these amazing “fields of gold” and whenever I would pull over to photograph the shining weeds, the sun would go in. I find myself so amazed by how the entire length of our short autumn days seem to be filled with the light of “magic hour”..  I saw that amazing light when I awoke, and it was still shining at 2pm, casting long hard shadows and setting alight anything it kissed. Of course it was also playing peek-a-boo with me behind the clouds, but it was magic light nonetheless.

And today when looking in the closet for Christmas boxes, I found a half-completed collage on posterboard. The backdrop in black and white was finished.. I had left the mosaic letters in color to do later… and never did. But “later” was today as I got down on the floor with colored magazine clippings and my glue stick. I still need to outline the letters and Mod Podge the whole thing, but here ya go.. Make Art. This will hopefully be a great reminder for me when Art Every Day Month is over to keep on! And to keep on even when you’ve just created something that you hate hate hate. There’s always the next thing; as long as I’m breathing I’m not “done”!

Just to show you that I am not making it up when I say I have things in stages that won’t mean much to an observer. I’ve gotten farther on this than it shows, but it still isn’t taking on visible shape. I just can’t whip out a new painting every day! This was canvas for an old splatter painting I did for fun. It no longer made me feel good to look at and I wanted this size canvas for my healing artwork, so I sanded it down some, gessoed it and painted this backdrop. There’s so much texture from underneath coming through, I find that sort of comforting, though. And anyway, as Leah posted today, art is soul-stretching even when it doesn’t come out right. This art is for me; so there is no “right” or “wrong” unless I say so.

ETA: Does anyone else see a face in this painting? I did not put it there on purpose!
